Solar Eclipse Information

for Monday, August 21, 2017

Good afternoon families.  On Monday August 21, there will be a solar eclipse.  The 75% partial solar eclipse will begin in Denair at approximately 9:00 a.m. and conclude at approximately 11:40 a.m.  The maximum eclipse is scheduled to occur at 10:17 a.m.  As a precaution we will minimize outdoor activities on Monday.  Recess and physical education will take place in doors.

Some teachers will be providing a formalized lesson on the solar eclipse.  Teachers will advise students to refrain from looking directly at the sun, including during the eclipse.  Classes with scheduled science lessons on the eclipse will provide students with pin hole viewers for observing the eclipse.   Please support your student by reminding him/her to refrain from looking directly at the sun without the proper equipment.

Parents may opt their children out of this experience by contacting the classroom teacher via email or class dojo.  Students who opt out will be directed to the office for an alternate activity while their class is outside.

Beard Takes Over as Denair Elementary Principal; LaFountain Temporarily Moves to Middle School Campus

Kelly Beard, who began this school year as the first-time principal at Denair Middle School, will finish out the year as principal at Denair Elementary Charter Academy.

Beard spent 13 years as a first-grade teacher on the elementary campus before moving into an administrative role last summer. She replaces Lucy Zamora, who resigned to care for a family member facing a health crisis.

Beard’s appointment is permanent, Denair UnifiedSuperintendent Aaron Rosander said Friday afternoon after a joint meeting with the staffs from the elementary and middle schools.

“We wish Ms. Zamora the very best as she navigates the challenges ahead,” Rosander said.

Brian LaFountain, the principal at Denair Charter Academy, will temporarily fill Beard’s position at the middle school for the final month of classes. Recruitment to hire a full-time principal already has begun, Rosander said. He hopes to have a new leader hired by early June.
